At the library

I'm currently typing this in at the library while I wait for my car. I have 1 hour and it's free, so I thought I may as well make the most of it.

Before I came out today I packed a writing bag. I have a book to proof, my 80k in 80 days to write, and a page plan to start for the next annual. I also have a finance magazine and a library book. Well, I don't want to get bored, do I?

On my way to the library I texted a builder and a decorator. I've pretty much come to a decision about what I'm going to do with the house for now. There's no way I can afford an extension or a conservatory, and there's some other work that really can wait. But I've decided to spend a little bit of my redundancy money on tarting up the house kerb appeal.

If I'm working from home - which I will be - I want a nice work space. So I've set on the decorator to do my bedroom, which has the work station in the corner and a makeshift desk beneath the window. This is the last room in the house for me to touch and it will need electrics doing too. While I have the electrician in I'll get him to earth the property as well. I can't afford new furniture, but what I have is perfectly adequate. With things on walls and a nice, clear work space, I should be motivated to get on with plenty of work.

I've also decided to give the house that kerb appeal in case it's up for rent or sale in the near future. I have no intention of leaving my lovely house, but if I get offered a decent enough package - and one has been hinted at - and I need to move, the house needs to look nice at least in case I have to sell it. So I'm getting the outside painted, and the back will be flagged and fenced. Earthing the property will also be a requirement if ever it's up for sale or rent.

With these 2 jobs done, for as long as I work and live here, the house will be even nicer. And they shouldn't break the bank but do need doing. The car replacement, for now, has to wait. It's having an overhaul today and I'll get a prognosis on it. But unless I get that blockbuster three book deal, or win a new car, I have this one for at least another year.

I settled down at the library to read the finance magazine and was amazed to see a feature entitled "don't move, improve". To read this after I'd made my decision and set on the work force was serendipitous. At the very least they suggest you give rooms and the outside a lick of paint, and tidy up any outdoor space, which is exactly what I'll be doing.

It's not as cool here in the libary as it was the last time I chose to work here, so I can probably stay here until the car is ready. Last time I had to go and find hot chocolate, it was so cold. I could have jumped on a train and gone to Meadowhall, but that would have required spending more money rather than earning it. And at least I have a comfy armchair here.

Oh, the brown water yesterday evening was just run off. Apparently the burst they fixed developed a leak. While the taps were running the first time, the water pressure dropped off and the cold tap coughed and spluttered. But when I emptied the bath and started again, the water was crystal clear.

Right, back to the grindstone ...

10 say Yo!:

It's good to know the experts agree with you, and yay for crystal clear water :)

I know the feeling on the car very well. I'm making mine last a bit longer than I'm comfortable with, too, but the bank account says it's the right thing to do. I hope so, anyway!

Sprucing the house up will pay back as it's now your office, too. I hope you don't have to move, unless it's for something excellent.

What you are doing sounds absolutely right. Not only will the house benefit but you will feel a sense of satisfaction and pleasure, especially as you will be spending more time there.
This all sounds so positive you've got ME excited.

Enjoy your time in the library, and what fun to spruce up the house!

Yes, Sarah. I know you only recently arrived on here, but regular readers know that I look on things like this as a sign.

The garage say there's no point in selling it yet as it will earn no more now than in a year's time. They say it's spot on for its age and that I'm just covering wear and tear at the moment.

Yes, getting the office area organised (i.e. book shelves on walls instead of taking up desk space) and looking nice will result in much more output.

Even with 4 new wheel trims the car looks brand new, Carol, and I know a lick of paint will help brighten up the house too.

And if you're excited, how do you think I'm starting to feel? I'm less than 3 weeks away from freedom.

Diane said...

Yes, Devon. I'm going to attack the paint cards ... just as soon as I've finished what work I need to do now.

So happy for you, Diane! I think the move you're making is the perfect one. You are one of those people that has the motivation and drive to work at home full-time.

Can't wait to see your new workspace!

It's exciting and scary all at the same time.
